The XBox is really suffering against the PS5
Record low take-up of XBox. Microsoft's latest earnings report for the first quarter of 2023 reveals that overall Xbox machine sales have fallen by 30% over the past three months, which could be problematic because fewer people chose the console over the PS5 in the previous quarter and even over the holiday season.
And the reason is simple: there were simply no games worth investing in an Xbox in 2022, while titles such as Horizon II: Forbidden West, Stray, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War: Ragnarok were released on PS5.
One thing Redmond shouldn't be bitter about, however, is that Xbox content and services revenue is up 3%, thanks largely to the success of Game Pass.
As of January 2022, the game service has more than 25 million active subscribers - but not on console. According to Phil Spencer, subscriber growth on Xbox has completely stalled, so they are now focusing more on PC users.
It's the worst period for Xbox so far since the launch of the next-generation gaming machines, Series X and Series S, at the end of 2020. When this increasingly worrying slide will end is anyone's guess.
