PS5 Slim: excited for the smaller and lighter PlayStation 5!
As Sony has done since the first PlayStation, a smaller and lighter version of its home console is isexpected. The Japanese company has also released a smaller version of the PS4, so we can look forward to the PS5 Slim. Unfortunately, we don't know when yet. Sony released the Slim versions of its previous two models 3 years after the original release, although for the first two versions it was 4 and 6 years respectively. This means that it is expected to arrive in late 2023 or early 2024.
The PS5 Slim isn't just for consumers who may have been put off by the sheer size - and price - of the launch model, as companies are cutting costs with Slim consoles. With production costs coming down, more efficient components are becoming available, so companies like Sony can create a smaller PS5 that costs less to produce and delivers the same experience in a smaller package.
As Techradar reports, however, Sony has already started cutting the PS5 before the PS5 Slim. At least for its internal components. The new models of the PS5 Digital Edition, the CFI-1100B, are a good 300 grams lighter than the launch model was, and Sony has even replaced the screw that comes with the PS5 stand. The redesigned console has also received a redesigned heatsink, creating an even lighter system.
It can often seem that cost savings can result in really cheap but poorer products when features are removed. In the case of the PS4 Slim, for example, they removed the optical port that was included in the launch model.
Still, the PS5 Slim's smaller design outweighs most of the negatives of the cheaper version. Sony will eventually replace the design of the original console with the new model, as it seeks to maximise its profit margins during production.
But if you're buying a PS5 in the meantime, Black Friday is worth waiting for. Because while it wasn't fashionable for Sony to sell its consoles at a much lower price on Black Friday, the console has been on the market for a few years now, so it's reasonable to expect a major price drop.
As the PS5 remains hard to come by, it may be wise to wait for the PS5 Slim - if you're patient enough to wait. The PS5 Slim will undoubtedly be cheaper than the PS5's current $499/£449 price tag, and the smaller profile will appeal to those who think the PlayStation 5 is simply too big. But it's likely to be quite a long wait.
And if you want a real console experience, look no further than Station Wagon. So be sure to Book an appointment early.
